How Many Fish in A 5 Gallon Tank

5 gallon fish tank is a very popular choice, especially among those fish hobbyists who have just begun to keep it. Those beginners believe that a 5 gallon is easier to maintain. But, due to the limited tank size and water surface area, 5 gallons could be very tricky if you don’t have a filtration system that is working properly. So, how many fish are in a 5-gallon tank? The answer is 1 to 4 fish. And how many fish can be in a 3-gallon tank? It’s 1 to 3 fish for 3 gallon tank.

The General Rule of Thumb for Stocking Any Fish Tank

The general rule of thumb for stocking any fish tank is one inch of fish per gallon of water in the aquarium. You can keep about 2–4 fish in a tank this size, as long as each fish is not larger than 1 inch. The one-inch fish per gallon rule would apply to most smaller fish breeds like Tetras, Betta, Rasbora, Shrimps, and more. Fish that can grow larger than 1 inch are not recommended for a 5-gallon tank. You wouldn’t want a 6″ Goldfish inside a tiny little 5-gallon tank. The Goldfish cannot be kept in a 5 gallon.

What Are Needed for A 5 gallon fish tank?

No matter how small your fish tank is, you still need to have a filtration system that can catch the large particles through its mechanical filtration and process the toxin by biofiltration.

Other than having a filter, if you have kept tropical fish, you are also going to need a small heater that can provide a constant balmy temperature to your fish. Your fish will not be too stressed due to the unstable temperature.

Can We Keep Betta in A 5-gallon Fish Tank?

A smaller tank isn’t that much more difficult than a larger tank if you’re willing to put in the work, you’re that much more limited in what you can do.

There are debates over the internet about whether we can keep Betta in a 5-gallon. Unfortunately, with a small tank, you’re going to be limited with fish that you can keep. 3–4 Bettas need at least 20 gallons (75.7 L). Betta harems are pretty tricky to set up in the first place and need all the space that they can get for aggression.

The best choices for your tank would be one male or one female Betta, The Least Killifish, or just invertebrates. Unfortunately, there are not too many species of fish you can keep in that size of a tank. That doesn’t mean that it will be boring, though!
