Why You’ll Love It

The hygger Biochemical Sponge Filter delivers powerful 3-in-1 filtration—mechanical, biological, and aeration—while staying whisper-quiet and easy to maintain. Perfect for shrimp, bettas, fry tanks, nano aquariums, and large tanks for supplemental filtration, it combines a high-density sponge with a ceramic bio media chamber to keep water clean, stable, and well-oxygenated. Available in Small, Medium, and Large sizes to fit aquariums from 5 to 125 gallons.

Key Features

3-in-1 Filtration System: Mechanical + Biological + Aeration

The sponge traps debris and particles, while ceramic bio media supports beneficial bacteria to remove harmful ammonia and nitrites. Rising bubbles from the air pump simultaneously oxygenate the tank.

hygger 120 Aquarium Biochemical Sponge Filter

Upgraded Biochemical Sponge

High-density, non-clogging sponge captures waste, uneaten food, and fish debris without harming delicate fish or shrimp.

Built-In Bio Media Chamber

Strengthens biological filtration with included ceramic media, improving water clarity and long-term stability.

Quiet & Energy Efficient

Silent operation powered by an external air pump (not included). Ideal for bedrooms, offices, and breeding setups.

Easy to Assemble, Clean & Maintain

The filter disassembles quickly for maintenance. Simply rinse the sponge in tank water—no complicated steps.

Great for Many Aquarium Types

Suitable for:

  • Shrimp tanks
  • Betta tanks
  • Breeding & fry grow-out tanks
  • Nano aquariums
  • Quarantine/hospital tanks
  • Large tanks (as auxiliary filtration)

hygger 120 Biochemical Sponge Filter Application

Three Sizes for Choice

Small: it works pretty well for filtration for 5-20 Gal small aquariums under 14″ depth with an air pump ≥ 1.5W.
Medium: suggested for 20-55 Gal medium-sized aquariums under 19.7″ depth with an air pump ≥ 2W.
Large: suggested for 55-125 Gal aquariums under 26.4″ depth with an air pump ≥ 5W.

Usage Tips

How It Works

  1. The air pump pushes air through the air stone.
  2. Rising bubbles create suction through the sponge.
  3. Sponge filters debris (mechanical filtration).
  4. Water passes through ceramic media (biological filtration).
  5. Clean, oxygen-rich water rises back into the tank.

hygger 120 Sponge Filter Cleaning

Note:
1. Rinse sponge every 2–4 weeks (based on bioload).
2. Works perfectly during power outages when paired with a battery air pump.

I’ve been using the hygger Cylindrical Aquarium Sponge Filter in my shrimp tank and honestly I’m very happy with it. It’s simple, quiet, and works really well for keeping the water clean without creating strong flow. The sponge is fine enough to catch small particles but still gentle for baby shrimp. It also gives a lot of surface area for beneficial bacteria, so the tank stays stable and healthy. The bubbles are soft and provide good oxygenation without stressing the shrimp. Another nice feature is the ceramic media inside, which adds extra biological filtration.

This sponge filter works well. I love the extra media, and I was going to love the built in air stone. The bubbles are larger than I like for my tanks, honestly doesn’t even seem like there’s an air stone in there. I’ll probably just add one. Also it floats a lot when you first put it in. The picture of it floating is after it had been running in the tank for a full day. I’ve had to squeeze the air out of it 4 times, it’s only the second day so I might have to more idk. We will see. I have had better sponge filters, but I’ll give this one a chance. Cleans the tank up well

  3. Works well but not great in sand. It sucks sand up through the bottom of the filter housing and starts piling up on top of the filter.
