Usage Tips

Enhance your aquascape and ensure optimal plant and fish health with these expert tips for using the hygger 957 aquarium light:

  1. Set Up the 24-Hour Natural Light Cycle for Stress-Free Environments
  • Use Auto Mode to simulate natural sunrise and sunset transitions. This prevents light shock and mimics day/night rhythms, promoting calm behavior in fish and boosting plant photosynthesis.
  • For best results, stick with the default ON at 6:30 AM and OFF at 11:30 PM, or customize your light schedule based on your tank’s needs.
  1. Customize Color & Brightness for Specific Plant Species
  • Use DIY mode to select from 7 LED colors and 10 brightness levels.
  • High-light plants (like Rotala, Monte Carlo, or Red Ludwigia) benefit from full-spectrum brightness (6500 K and more).
  • Low-light plants (like Anubias, Java Fern, or Crypts) thrive with reduced intensity and red/blue combinations.
  • Moonlight Mode creates a peaceful nighttime ambiance while letting nocturnal species stay active.
  1. Positioning for Maximum Coverage
  • Place the fixture centrally above the tank for even light distribution across the substrate and water column.
  • Adjust the mounting brackets to fit tanks 12–55 inches wide for secure and stable installation.
  1. Utilize Memory Function for Uninterrupted Lighting
  • Power outage? No problem. The built-in memory function restores your last-used settings automatically—no reprogramming required.
  • Use the one-touch memory preset to lock in your favorite settings for daily convenience.
  1. Safe & Efficient Operation
  • Never submerge the light—while IP68 water-resistant, it is designed for use above the waterline.
  • Operate using low-voltage DC power for energy efficiency and long-term safety.
  • No noisy fan = silent operation, ideal for tanks in bedrooms or offices.
  1. Long-Term Maintenance
  • Gently wipe down the aluminum housing monthly to remove condensation or mineral buildup.
  • Ensure the brackets remain tight and secure for stable positioning over time.

the 72w light is brilliant, New set up 2 weeks in and my new plants are showing new growth in 2 days and no lose of colour or dying leaves {normally lose a few leaves before as thought this was due to change of water and settling in}.. anyway it's so good I've bought another for a new tank setting up next week!!!

  1. This is a great plant light. Setup is a bit difficult but watch a video on YouTube on how to setup helps a lot. My plants grow so fast I have to trim and throw away what I don’t need. You have to be careful not to touch the control or you might have to reset it. That’s and being its difficult to setup is the only flaw. But still love this light.

  2. I have a pretty wide 55 gallon tropical fish tank and got the light to match that width. After using it for a week I’ve been really happy with it. I found many other lights that had issues working with timers and dimmers or other issues but this one has a built in timer and dimmer that work well. The only problem I had was that in the default mode the light would come on at full power. But there is a special mode they call DIY that lets you set the time and the brightness for something like 5 different stages. That works perfectly. I set it to 50% during the day because the light is very bright and can put off a lot of heat if you burn it on full. But at 50% it doesn’t heat up really at all. I have it dim down to 20% in the evening and then when it hits the off time it turns like a dark blue/violet that then fades out. I think this is probably easier on the fish.

Overall, I think if you are looking around for the best light this may be it and it’s a pretty good value considering you won’t need to buy a timer.

  3. Light is outstanding! It makes my Fluval light look dull, and I love the 15 – min ramp time when the light comes on and off to prevent light shock. I have paid double for lights that are not a good. Trust me, buy it. You won’t be disappointed.

  4. After receiving the light, my tank developed algae issues, which didn’t present the product in the best way. This wasn’t due to any fault of the light itself but rather the need to rebalance the tank and adapt to a stronger light. Resolving this took some time.

During this period, I also reassessed my content strategy to ensure I brought a unique angle to the review, as there are already many existing videos on the Hygger 957 light. My focus is now on how well it performs in growing plants, which is what most of my audience is interested in. To properly demonstrate this, I needed time to allow for visible plant growth. I specifically challenged the light’s ability to grow carpet plants while also covering its operation and features.

You’ll be happy to hear that the light has performed well, and I just filmed new footage yesterday showcasing its progress.

  6. The settings can be a little confusing on setup but it works great for my 10 gal planted tank.

  7. I haven’t had this light for very long. Here is a picture a day after setup, and a week and a half later. It’s easy enough to set the time and let it go through its day/night cycle. However the light does get fairly hot to the touch. Apparently more expensive lights are more expensive because they are equipped with a substantial heat sink, which theoretically prolongs the lifespan of the light. Also, the color of the light, imo, is not extremely beautiful. However I guess cooler lights are better for growing water plants or something? And now after a couple weeks it’s growing on me a bit, it is enjoyable to watch the inhabitants under this light. And I do have a plant that was growing green but is now getting a little red under this light, which indicates that it’s strong enough. So really it’s doing its job, and any other light that had different pros would also have different but equivalent cons.

  8. Updated review: The seller reached out and offered a replacement which I received promptly. I have been using the replacement now for a week or two and it works beautifully. Turns on and off when it should and even has “off” as one of the options as you click through the colors, etc which the last one didnt have. Every time it messed up and did its own thing I would have to unplug it and completely start over. Because of the great customer service and receiving a product that works as stated I have upped my rating to 5 stars.

Original review…it started just doing whatever it wanted. I had it set to turn on slowly over 15 minutes at 7am and to do the same but shutting off the light slowly over 15 minutes at 7pm. It worked great for a short time and then started doing the blue moonlight at 7pm and now the light shuts completely off (no dimming over 15 minutes) at 6:30pm and then turns the blue “moonlight” on at 7pm all of which has also never been set and then off 11:30pm so its literally just doing what it wants when it wants and its been changing daily. I haven’t ever turned it off by unplugging or lost power so its just wonky and not working as it should. For the price it definitely has not been worth it for me.

  9. I was sent the HG957, 72 watt light to test out and review. I matched it up to my existing Fluval 2.0 on my 55 gallon freshwater community tank. It was as bright, if not brighter than the 2.0. This light came with a built in timer, dimming capabilities and 24/7 mode. The timer is programmable to allow for a ramp up and run and then a ramp down to moonlight and off. The rendering index helps to not spook your fish when it comes on and unlike other bright lights it does not hurt your eye or cause them strain. This 24/7 mode has worked out great on my planted tank thus far. I run this alongside my 2.0 and with both lights I don’t have an issues with light spread. The light is impressive and I am not being paid to say anything I have spoke on in this review. For the price point it will tough to find any light that has as many features packed into it. Want to spruce up you tank and make your fishes colors pop, this will get that done and so far my plants are responding well to this light. This is a no brainer when it comes to a full spectrum light for your aquarium. Check out my hygger 957 light video review and see for your self.

  10. I love the light I won. I have another tank and I will be upgrading to a Hygger light for that tank also. The light makes the tank look so much better.
